Secure our Reef’s future
What can $1 do?
$50 prevents 1 tonne of sediment from reaching the Great Barrier Reef The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest living organisms and one of the most bio-diverse places on earth. It’s under threat. The Reef also supports the culture and livelihoods of 70 Traditional Owner groups, who have been its custodians for over 60,000 years. Since 1985, the Reef has lost 50% of its coral cover due to climate change and poor water from land-based run-off. More than 10 million tonnes of sediment from eroded gullies flow onto the Reef every year, smothering corals and seagrass, creating algal blooms, degrading water quality, and weakening the Reef’s ability to recover. Coastal wetlands are essential. They act like kidneys, filtering out the sediment from agriculture, industry and urban land use. But over 50% of wetlands have already been lost. Greening Australia and Traditional Owners are working to restore 2,000 hectares of eroded land and 10,000 hectares of wetlands by 2030. This will prevent 400,000 tonnes of sediment from polluting the Reef each year, improving water quality, the Reef’s resilience to climate change, and the livelihoods and wellbeing of Indigenous Australians. Note: To ensure greatest impact, donations are sent to Greening Australia to support this and other related projects. This allows them to use their expertise to direct resources to be as effective as possible.
Help prevent maternal death
What can $1 do?
$50 can prevent a mother and child from dying during childbirth. In Eastern Burma, 1 in 12 women are at risk of dying during pregnancy or when giving birth. These are some of the highest rates in the world. To prevent maternal and infant mortality, safe delivery and proper care in the early days of a child’s life is essential. Mae Tao Clinic offers comprehensive care for pregnant women and babies through antenatal care check-ups, delivery with a trained midwife and treatment in case of emergencies, helping to save the lives of mothers and babies. The Mae Tao Clinic is a health service provider and training centre, established to contribute and promote accessible health care among displaced Burmese and ethnic people along the Thai-Burma border. Note: To ensure the greatest impact, donations are sent to Mae Tao Clinic with the flexibility to support this and other related projects. This allows Mae Tao Clinic to respond to communities’ immediate needs, and use their expertise to direct resources to be as effective as possible.
Give sick children joy
What can $1 do?
$39 gives one sick child access to the Starlight Express Room for a year. Every minute of every day a child is admitted to hospital. When a once-bright life becomes dulled by needles, hospital visits and painful treatments, Starlight helps sick kids forget their illness and rediscover the joy of childhood. There’s a Starlight Express Room in every children’s hospital in Australia. In these vibrant medical-free zones our superhero, Captain Starlight, brightens the world for seriously ill children and their families. Through games, movies, performances and more, Starlight helps sick kids forget their illness for a while and get down to the serious business of having fun! Captain Starlight also brightens the otherwise clinical wards with daily ward rounds full of jokes, magic and laughter. There are over 160 Captain Starlights delivering joy around the country! Note: To ensure greatest impact, donations are sent to the Starlight Foundation to support this and other related projects. This allows them to use their expertise to direct resources to be as effective as possible.
